CEREMONY

SMOKING CEREMONY (EVENT*)

Talent: Tony Lee
Duration: Approx. 20 min (includes preparation + 2 min talk)

Weaving Workshops

BAMBOO SCULPTURAL WEAVING WORKSHOP

Talent: Tony Lee
Duration: 1 hour

A workshop for both males and females of all ages, learning the traditional Indigenous craft of bamboo weaving.
Larrakia artist Tony ‘Duwun’ Lee demonstrates how to create a native animal sculpture by bending and shaping both thick and thin bamboo. Bamboo is a significant resource in traditional Larrakia culture. While Darwin has many of introduced species, it also has its own native yellow-coloured bamboo. Top End Aboriginal people refer to bamboo as ‘barm-bu’. Traditionally, Larrakia people used bamboo for rafts, musical instruments, containers (water and bush foods), but mostly for spears (as it floats – so you don’t lose your spear when fishing!). The Larrakia People are the Tradtional Owners of the Darwin region.
